The Languedoc Heart of Hérault destination, rich in natural and heritage assets, houses three Great Sites of France*. All are part of the Terres d’Hérault Global Geopark, internationally recognized for its remarkable geological heritage.
From the arid plateaus of the Cirque de Navacelles to the red lands of Lake Salagou, passing through the green gorges of the Hérault, these landscapes are experienced at the pace of nature. On the trails, in the villages, or through encounters, take the time to discover and let yourself be guided by those who live and pass on the unique identity of their territory, in every season.
On foot, by bike, or on horseback, these great landscapes are discovered differently, at the rhythm of nature. Discover four itineraries, tailor-made escapes, for a lasting and meaningful immersion.
1
Starting from Le Caylar, set off on an unforgettable cycling adventure through the heart of the Causse du Larzac. Your journey begins with an immersion into the vastness of the Causse, land of sheep and arid landscapes shaped by time. A wild land where vast limestone plateaus alternate with the spectacular gorges of the Vis, the mills of the Foux, and the Cirque de Navacelles. Upon arrival at the hamlet of Navacelles, leave your bikes with your host and set off on a hike in the heart of the Cirque, a unique and remarkable place.
2
From the hamlet of Navacelles, take your bikes again and continue your journey to discover an exceptional natural and historical heritage marked by the presence of menhirs and dolmens, witnesses of ancient civilizations that shaped these lands. Nearby, make a stop at La Vacquerie Saint Martin de Castries, a typical causse village. Along the way, pass through Arboras, where Mont Saint-Baudille, the highest point of the territory, marks the passage between the Larzac and the Hérault Valley. Then, discover the charming vineyard village of Montpeyroux and explore the Castellas, a medieval fortress offering a breathtaking view of the valley. Finally, continue your path through the Gorges of the Hérault, ride to Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert where you will find your accommodation. Discover this historic medieval jewel inviting you to explore its cobbled streets, stone houses, and the Abbey of Gellone, an architectural marvel of Romanesque art.
3
Take your bikes again and continue your adventure through the Gorges of the Hérault. Admire the legendary Devil’s Bridge and its magnificent natural setting. Then, Saint-Jean-de-Fos, a potters' village, opens the doors of its workshops to let you discover an ancestral know-how. Your route continues through exceptional landscapes between vineyards and olive groves. Continue your journey towards St Jean de la Blaquière and its red lands, then head to Lodève, a former episcopal city. Take the small roads towards one of the most authentic traditional Tibetan temples in Europe, Lérab Ling. To finish this itinerary, you will cross another part of the Causse du Larzac to arrive at Le Caylar, a stopover village equipped with many local shops. Don’t miss: the carved tree with its original shapes and the Roc Castel which will offer you an exceptional panorama. Congratulations on this beautiful adventure!
