Karisto–Pajulahti: Paddling route from Lahti to Kymijoki and Kimola Canal

Start the route from Karisto beach, you can also start from the northern side of Kymijärvi at Kaukkari beach. The route runs through Kymijärvi towards the east. You can paddle close to the northern shores or near the more built southern shore. There are several small nature reserves on Kymijärvi, the largest being Haikkari point. There is a nature trail if you want to stop and stretch. Landing is not recommended at Lammassaari nature reserve during bird nesting season.

At the eastern end of the lake, you will see relatively new detached houses on the slope; head towards them and you will easily find the mouth of Kyynäroja. At the beginning of Kyynäroja is an underpass tunnel you can paddle through. You come to Kärkjärvi via the river, then turn right around Levoniemi. Härhöjoki starts from the right at the bay's end. In summer vegetation is dense in the bay, but you can pass through the reed beds! Härhöjoki winds towards Alvojärvi; just before the local road, you will need to get out of your kayak for a bit at a small threshold. Land on the right side and carry your canoe/kayak over the threshold. Crossing under the road is possible via a new culvert.

At Alvojärvi, head right where the lake soon narrows into Kukkasjoki. You reach the old mill site (note! strong current in spring). Landing site is on the right side of the river. Carry over the road and the route continues through reed beds to Villähde's Kukkas lake. The route continues towards Turpee strait; you can detour to the beach at the lake's southwest corner if you wish. There is also a toilet.

In Turpee strait, watch the stones at the eastern end of the strait, some of which are underwater. After passing the narrow part of the strait, you are on Little Kukkas lake. The route crosses the lake heading east. On the south shore are Luomaniemi camp center (Lahti parish) and the Taarasti art center.

From Little Kukkas you reach Big Kukkas via under Karhunsilta bridge. Continue along the left shore towards Pajulahti Sports Institute, where you land at the paddling shed shore.

The route is fairly easy and safe. Kyynäroja, Härhöjoki and Kukkasjoki are small rivers. Crossing Kukkasjoki by carrying, landing sites clearly marked. Ruins of old mill at Kukkasjoki landing site, beware of strong current in spring.

Pay attention to wind conditions especially on Kymijärvi and Little and Big Kukkas lakes.
