The Varjansaari route is a basic circuit on the Vääksy side of Vesijärvi. It is just over 2 kilometers straight to the Varjansaari lean-to shelter, so just popping in at the shelter is an easy 1-2 hour trip, which in calm weather also suits SUP boarding.
You can start from several different beaches and also enjoy a relaxing beach day along with paddling.
The distance by circling Varjansaari is just under 10 kilometers. The lean-to shelter is hidden behind a reed belt; a small rocky islet serves as a landmark.
There is a birdwatching tower at the mouth of the canal.
Áno
A kayak, canoe, or rowboat is suitable for this nearby route. In calm weather, you can even paddle to Varjansaari with a SUP board or packraft.
Always remember life jackets, regardless of the watercraft you use.
Parking spaces are best available at the boat ramps/swimming beaches: Suivanranta (end of Venetie) and Pirppulanranta (end of Juhanintie). At Pirppula and Suivanranta, paddling equipment can be transported all the way to the shore. From the Kalmarinranta parking lot to the beach is about 100 m (Kalmarinpolku, through the underpass). The equipment must be carried from the parking lot; the shore is not accessible by car.

The Varjansaari lean-to shelter hides behind a reed belt. You will best find the shore by the small islet.
On hot summer days, quieter starting points are Suivanranta (at the end of Venetie) and Pirppulanranta (at the end of Juhanintie).
The long sandy beach at Kalmarinranta is one of Päijät-Häme's most popular swimming beaches. In addition to the stunning sandy beach, there are diverse recreational opportunities on the shore, including a playground, frisbee and tennis courts, and a summer kiosk.
The nearby Vääksy canal is a beautiful cultural and historical site worth seeing.
You can also paddle or row in the canal but stay near the edge and beware of boat traffic and boat waves. From the upper part of the canal on the Vesijärvi side, it is possible to take a detour to the small, enchantingly lush Vääksynjoki River!
In Vääksy, restaurants and other services are close by. Within walking distance from Kalmarinranta, there are several cafes.
