The Sanctuary of the Madonna del Carmine or "del Ciavanis" is the highest sanctuary in the Valli di Lanzo, located on a plateau from which you can enjoy a fantastic panorama of the Val Grande. The building, recently restored, dates back to the eighteenth century and preserves numerous ex-votos.
The path climbs fairly steeply up through wide pastures and alpine meadows. Given the good exposure, the route often clears from snow already by the end of the spring season.
Descending along the forestry-pastoral road, you divert onto a path to also visit the roc d'le Masche, a curious huge boulder whose unique erosion shapes have been attributed by legend to the masche (women with supernatural powers) who took the boulder to destroy the Devil's Bridge of Lanzo, but, stopped by the devil, were forced to put the large stone back in place with great effort: this is why they left their marks on it.
Take the path that starts just above the parking lot and crosses a beautiful meadow. The path then continues at the edge of the forest. Ignore the fork to the left that leads directly to the roc d'le Masche, which will be the return path. The route then crosses the stream and begins to climb steeply through the undergrowth. You then reach wide alpine pastures and continue climbing until you reach the Lower Alpe Paglia. Keep climbing, ignoring the detour to Upper Alpe Paglia, and shortly after, take the stone staircase with its 366 steps up to the Sanctuary.
From the sanctuary, cross the meadows northwest of the sanctuary to take the dirt road downhill. Follow it until about 1792 m elevation where you find a narrow path that descends through meadows and, after reaching a couple of alpine pastures, reaches the roc d'le Masche. Alternatively, you can continue along the dirt road and comfortably return to the hamlet of Vonzo.
From the roc d'le Masche, a path descends into the forest until it meets the ascent route: then turn right and return to the starting point.
Non-slip sole footwear is recommended, wind/rain protection, a warm layer, hat and sunglasses, and a water reserve.
There are no refreshment points along the route, so be sure to stock up on water and food.
Enter the Lanzo valleys, just before Ceres turn right at the traffic lights and enter the Val Grande di Lanzo. Upon reaching Chialamberto, turn right following signs for Vonzo and Candiela. Then reach Vonzo, continue on the road that circles the hamlet until the parking lot near the church.

Spend 5 minutes walking through the stone and wooden houses of the ancient alpine village of Vonzo: it will be like going back in time!
