Baroque playfulness, medieval romance, and refined wine culture form an inspiringly lively liaison in Palatine Freinsheim.
Medieval walls, a sea of vines, rustic wine estates and wine taverns as well as a glass of Palatine wine accompanied by snacks at the end – cycling in the holiday region of Freinsheim is also a thoroughly successful culinary experience.
An enjoyable, mostly flat cycling experience for families and hobby cyclists in one of the most beautiful sections of the German Wine Route holiday region.
The route has no individual signage.
CAR NAVIGATION: At the freight yard, 67251 Freinsheim. The “Oschelskopf route” partly runs on the “Kraut- und Rüben-Radweg” (Cabbage and Root Vegetable Cycle Path), partly on the “German Wine Route” cycle path.
We start on the west side of Freinsheim station (car park at the back), turn left into Bahnhofstraße, cycle along it to the town exit and then switch to the roadside cycle path on the right side of the country road. After about 200 m the “Black Cross” from around the year 1430 appears on the left on the opposite side of the street. Worth seeing: the biblical crucifixion scene. TIP: To the right, a small detour to the natural monument 'Hahnenplatz' with its old chestnut trees is an option. Cross a street junction straight ahead and continue parallel to the country road. At a cycle path junction, turn right towards Kallstadt (2.5 km). Now always stay on the paved path. About 200 m after a right bend, at a fork, turn left towards Kallstadt. At the rural winery, turn right and ride along the eastern edge of Kallstadt and reach Freinsheimer Straße. Freinsheimer Straße leads left into the town centre with many restaurants and wineries. The Oschelskopf route immediately leads out of town again, always straight ahead towards the north. Halfway – slightly uphill – towards Herxheim we cross the small bridge over the Schlittgraben. We take the next paved farm road on the right and the following one on the left and cycle a short stretch with a steeper incline up to Herxheim am Berg and reach the main street below the castle gardens with St. Jacob's Church. TIP: A detour to the castle garden with its great panoramic view of the Rhine Plain is worthwhile. We ride the main street left uphill into the town centre. At the traffic light, continue straight ahead. At the exit of Herxheim am Berg, turn half left on a paved path that leads into the vineyards. Finally, we reach the L517 between Weisenheim am Berg and Leistadt. Cross this straight ahead and continue cycling towards the small forest.
We meet the German Wine Route cycle path, which we follow to the right – towards Weisenheim am Berg. Weisenheim am Berg is reached. Crossroads in town, continue straight ahead. Then turn right into “Karl-Gayer-Straße”. This now takes a right/left bend and meets Leistadter Straße. Follow this left through the town with its numerous dining options. Finally, we reach the village square with the catholic church and meet the main street. Continue straight ahead past the church. At the bending priority road, turn right to exit the town. There, continue left and after about 100 m switch to the roadside cycle path.
Now head towards “Bobenheim am Berg”. In Bobenheim am Berg on the street through the whole town. At the exit of the town switch back to the roadside cycle path “German Wine Route/Panorama route”. At a street crossing, turn right towards Kleinkarlbach (roadside cycle path). We now leave the Freinsheim holiday region and change over to Leiningerland.
Kleinkarlbach is reached. Crossroads in town. Right, and immediately left into “Röthenbacherstraße”. At a power house, we reach a stream. Here right, and now always follow the “Eckbach Mill Cycle Path” along the stream. Crossroads under a large road bridge. Here turn right, uphill to the main street and follow it to the left into the town of Kirchheim an der Weinstraße.
In Kirchheim an der Weinstraße, cross the unguarded railway crossing and go straight ahead – on the main street – through the town. At the exit of the town turn right onto a cycle path. At a retention basin and bridge turn left, then – 100 m further on – right onto the “Kraut und Rüben” cycle path (carrot logo) towards Freinsheim. Now always straight ahead – on the right you can see the Dackenheim golf course – until you reach Freinsheim.
Freinsheim is reached. At the sports field, turn right towards the roundabout. Cross it straight ahead and cycle into Freinsheim. We pass the fire brigade and in a right-hand bend turn left into “Hauptstraße”. Follow it straight ahead, over cobblestones into the historic old town. At the market square with the baroque town hall, turn left, soon pass through the “Iron Gate” and leave the old town again. At a crossroads continue straight ahead. TIP: A detour to the Freinsheim Baroque Garden to the right is worth it. It's only around 50 m. A wonderful garden with a fountain and seating areas. We reach the Freinsheim bypass road. Here right, and immediately left again, past the Netto market. Now always straight ahead – through orchards and vegetable fields – towards Weisenheim am Sand.
Weisenheim am Sand is reached. At the roundabout turn right, and continue straight ahead along Bahnhofstraße through the town. Between the two churches, over the railway tracks past the station. Shortly before the town exit, turn straight ahead into the street “Ziegelhütte”. Now gently uphill. At a fork – still before the riding facility – keep left. Now always straight ahead through vineyards. At a crossroads go straight ahead. At the next crossroads at “Eyersheimerhof” turn right. Follow the “Kraut und Rüben” cycle path towards Erpolzheim/Bad Dürkheim.
We have reached Erpolzheim. Straight ahead into the town until we meet the country road. Here turn right and continue on the roadside cycle path (left side of the road) towards Freinsheim.
At the entrance to Freinsheim change back onto the road. After a gas station turn left into “Badstraße” to the historic town hall in the old town. OUR RECOMMENDATION: Here you should park your bikes and explore the historic old town with its many defense towers, romantic alleys, and hidden corners on foot. Especially beautiful: the “city wall circular route”! Also worthwhile: a visit to the toy museum, An der Bach 9. Afterwards, it's not far to the station. Simply pass the town hall on the left, follow “Hauptstraße” which soon becomes “Bahnhofstraße”. Passing the Verbandsgemeinde town hall, you soon return to Freinsheim station, our starting and finishing point.
