The beaver, once threatened with extinction, has long since become native again in the Drömling. The Bibertour is named after this shy rodent. The chance to encounter it on the nearly 30-kilometer medium-difficulty route is great. The path leads through the rugged Drömling landscape with its ditches and meadows and its typical animal and plant world. Where else would you find the marsh marigold or the water lily? Where else can you encounter the black-tailed godwit or crane and heron? Where else can you watch the mute swan gliding quietly over the water or listen to its song? From afar, the church towers of romantic villages greet you as always, where time seems to have stopped. This was the cradle of the Reformation in the Altmark. This is the home of Bartholomaeus Rieseberg, one of the most passionate advocates of Luther's teachings… The Bibertour – this is Drömling for beginners. A route for cyclists who seek peace and untouched nature.
Miesterhorst is one of the municipalities located on the Bibertour. Behind the houses, we see a stork's nest on a lattice mast and can also observe the typical Altmark style of the farm properties and residential houses. At the train station, we use the tunnel to pass under the ICE railway. After passing under the federal road, we come to a forest path heading towards Kahnstieg, the so-called Schnabelweg. In 1998, some wild pear trees, then "Tree of the Year," were planted here. The small growth of these trees shows how poor the sandy soils are here. The path is partly paved, partly unpaved. The houses on Kahnstieg are spread far apart along the road from Buchhorst to Dannefeld. Following the road to the right, we reach the Friedrich Canal after about 100 meters. On the left side, we follow the Friedrich Canal to the three locks.
After about 7 km, we reach this distinctive point, which recalls the great Drömling drainage operation. The "lock temple," an idyllic shelter with a table and benches, invites you to linger here in the meadow landscape typical of the area. Here, the very popular spring barbecue of the tourist association is held annually on Mother's Day.
In the Drömling, characterized by its moorland and meadows, we find grazing horses or mother cows in many places. A shortcut is possible (map recommended) – about 300 m back from the locks, a path branches left directly to Dannefeld, the Ochsenweiderdamm. Numerous benches are available.
On our further journey along the Friedrich Canal, we find signs on the embankment of the nocturnal activities of the native Elbe beaver. Small stumps tell us where young trees once stood.
Past meadows and small woods, the path leads us to Köckter Damm. We follow this to the right towards Köckte. Here, as in other parts of the Drömling, we encounter distinctive moor embankment cultures. Besides yellow-flowering marsh marigolds and water irises as well as overgrown ditches, various other colorful highlights can be found. The white plumage of the mute swans standing in the distance gleams. A leap of deer crosses the area. The path leads us through the greenery intersected by numerous ditches to Köckte. With 12.5 km in our legs, the Drömling village offers another opportunity for a rest with its church, local heritage room, and the newly renovated village community house. Before the estate "Drömling" GmbH (cattle fattening facility), we keep to the right and follow a field path with cobblestones through the farmland to Dannefeld. In the half-timbered church of Dannefeld, the legendary farmers' flag can be viewed by arrangement.
On a cycle path over the belt, we reach Peckfitz. Here, too, we find a half-timbered church but with a brick tower. Through the fields, the path leads us southwards to Mieste. From Mieste-Nord, we reach the town center through a railway underpass. Here, with numerous shops, a restaurant, and the church with the monument in front of it commemorating the reformer and Luther disciple Rieseberg, a somewhat longer stay is possible. You are also welcome to visit the Tourist Information of the Mieste tourist association (https://fvv-mieste.de/). The ice cream café and the restaurant "Haus Altmark" offer a chance to linger. Along an asphalted cycle path, following the B 188, which again leads us through forests along meadows and fields, we finally reach our starting point in Miesterhorst via Lenz.
