During this tour, you will get to know the most famous and popular legends of the old town. In some places, stone witnesses to history have survived to the present day.
Beginning with the true story of the Görlitz clothiers' revolt of 1527, which is connected to the legend of the clock of the bell tower of the Trinity Church. The legend of the "night smith" tells of the pact of the devil and the smith. The legend of the "Klötzelmönch", which is probably the best-known Görlitz legend, tells of a wicked Franciscan monk. At the town hall tower, you can see the town hall lion and sometimes you can also hear the lion roar. In Neißstraße there is a talking inn sign which is connected with the legend of the "Two men with the jug". On the eaves cornice of St. Peter's church, there is the sorrowful figure of a roofer who tragically lost his life during the construction work. In Peterstraße the residence of Gerogor Gobius is located. Gobius was an alchemist and came under suspicion of sorcery. In Büttnerstraße you will find the inn which is called "Dreibeiniger Hund" (three legged dog), where the legend of the same name took place. Finally, go to the nearby St. Nicholas Cemetery to the "Mollerlinde". There are two different legends about its origin.
You will get more detailed information on the legends at the marked points along the route.
Stay on Brüderstraße and walk past the so-called Blechner to Untermarkt. On Untermarkt you will find the town hall tower with the town hall lion.
Continue via Neißstraße past the Biblical House to the Hainwald. At the corner Neißstraße and Kränzelstraße you will see two men holding a jug together on the upper floor of the corner house. Walk past the "Neidecke" and Hainwald to St. Peter's Church.
Above the entrance to St. George's Chapel you will find the sculpture of a roofer on the gutter under the eaves cornice.
From here it is only a few steps to Villa Gobius at Peterstraße 13. Via Rosenstraße you come to Büttnerstraße and to the "Dreibeiniger Hund" inn. Then walk past the Nikolaiturm via Bogstraße to the St. Nicholas Cemetery.
From St. Nicholas Cemetery, walk along Büttnerstraße and Fleischerstraße back to the Görlitz-Information.
