HOHE TAUERN PANORAMA TRAIL | ST09: Pinzgauer Hütte | Uttendorfer Hochsonnbergalm/Uttendorf-Pinzgauer Hütte

On the north side of the Uttendorfer Hochsonnbergalm (contact: Shuttle service to Sonnbergalm Markus Gassner Tel. +43 6563 8484) you pass through the gate you also came through in the previous stage, but then follow the hiking trail to the right around a terrain edge. Always gently ascending, you will reach the original route of the Pinzgauer Spaziergang again, which runs above the Uttendorfer Hochsonnbergalm. In the same walking direction, continue along this path towards "Pinzgauer Hütte/Schmittenhöhe" along the southern slopes and reach a crossroads southeast of Klinglertörl at a small shelter hut. 

From here, coming from the left, i.e. from Klinglertörl, joins the variant of the Pinzgauer Spaziergang from Saalbach – however, you continue straight ahead to the east. From here the hiking trail is noticeably better developed and initially has almost the character of a promenade. However, nothing changes in the trail layout: continue more or less at the same elevation along the southern slopes. You reach a few huts, ignore a right turn towards Niedernsill (continue to follow the signs "Pinzgauer Hütte / Schmittenhöhe") and continue on the Pinzgauer Spaziergang trail over alpine meadows to the Klammscharte (1,993 m). Continue the path south of Gernkogel around another terrain edge to the Rohrertörl (1,918 m). Enjoy the fantastic view to the north of the Lofer and Leogang stone mountains. 

At the east end of the broad Rohrertörl, keep right again towards "Hochsonnbergalm/Pinzgauer Hütte" and follow the soon wider forest road at the same elevation to the junction to the Piesendorfer Hochsonnbergalm (yes, with the Uttendorfer Hochsonnbergalm and the Piesendorfer Hochsonnbergalm there are two almost identically named alpine pastures). The Pinzgauer Spaziergang continues straight ahead here. However, we recommend following the forest road downwards to the right and combining the small detour with a stop at the Piesendorfer Hochsonnbergalm, a managed rustic alpine hut.

From here, you then start directly uphill again and soon meet the Pinzgauer Spaziergang trail again. Continue on the trail at the same elevation to the east up to the Kesselscharte (1,844 m). 

Now you leave the Pinzgauer Spaziergang for today and turn sharply right onto a path towards Pinzgauer Hütte, which leads you in the opposite walking direction down to a forest road. Follow the forest road shortly to the right and after about 100 m turn sharply left onto a hiking trail, which leads you – again in the usual walking direction – down to the Pinzgauer Hütte (1,700 m), your stage destination, within a few minutes.

For the Hohe Tauern Panorama Trail, alpine hiking equipment is required:

The Hohe Tauern Panorama Trail mostly lies at elevations between 1,300 m and 2,450 m – this must be considered when selecting hiking equipment (especially your clothing). Despite the not too long stage, you need stable hiking weather.  This stage of the Hohe Tauern Panorama Trail runs continuously near the ridge and sometimes only trail traces (although well marked) can be seen.

Coming from the north - (D, NL, ...): Munich - Kufstein - St. Johann in Tirol - Kitzbühel - Pass Thurn - Mittersill - Piesendorf

Coming from the west (CH): Inntal motorway - exit Wörgl East - St. Johann in Tirol - Kitzbühel - Pass Thurn - Mittersill - Piesendorf

Coming from the east: Vienna - Salzburg - St. Johann im Pongau - Zell am See - Piesendorf

Coming from the south: Lienz - Matrei - Felbertauernstraße (toll road) - Mittersill - Piesendorf

Coming from Zell am See, take Regional Bus 670 from the Zell am See station (direction Krimml via Uttendorf-Mittersill-Neukirchen) to the Uttendorf town center stop. From here, take the shuttle service Markus Gassner

Coming from the Zillertal, take Regional Bus 4094 from Zell am Ziller station to Almdorf Königsleiten junction Gerlospass. Change to Regional Bus 673 (Wald Ortsmitte via Krimml). At Krimml station, change to Regional Bus 670 (Mittersill station via Neukirchen) to Uttendorf town center.

From here, take the shuttle service Markus Gassner
