Schattberg circular route

You start at the Maria Alm service center and follow path no. 12 behind the church. Walk past the House of Encounter and the elementary school until you reach the federal road. Cross the street and then go right along the Urslau until you reach the district Unterberg. From there, follow path no. 27a past the Jetzbachbauer to the Hangleiten. Here you turn right again and follow path no. 27 to the Schlossberg. From there, you can descend to Maria Alm. Alternatively, you have the option to descend to Maria Alm via the Peace Chapel on path no. 27c.

Self-assessment: Before every mountain hike, check your physical fitness and realistically assess your strength as well as that of your companions – especially your children! Surefootedness and freedom from dizziness are often very important!

Planning and preparation: Plan every intended mountain hike carefully beforehand. Hiking maps and guides as well as advice from alpine clubs and locals such as mountain guides and hut keepers can be helpful.

Equipment: You need appropriate equipment and clothing on the mountain, especially sturdy, high shoes with a grippy sole. Weather and cold protection are indispensable; the weather can often change unexpectedly.

Weather forecasts: Observe the current weather conditions at: zamg.at or www.uwz.at.

Together: Pay attention to the 10 rules for the proper handling of grazing animals and do not leave any waste in nature!

Do not dislodge stones: Do not dislodge stones because this can seriously endanger other hikers. Marked areas with rockfall danger should be crossed as quickly and attentively and cautiously as possible.

Turn around in time: This is no shame but a sign of wisdom. It becomes necessary when the weather changes, fog sets in, or the path is too difficult or not in good condition.

Arrival from Salzburg: Take the A10 motorway to the Bischofshofen exit, then take the B311 towards Bischofshofen. Follow the Hochkönig federal road/B164 to Maria Alm.
Arrival from Innsbruck/Kufstein: Follow the Loferer Straße/B178 towards St. Johann i.T., then via the Hochkönig federal road/B164 via Saalfelden to Maria Alm.
A valid vignette is required to use the Austrian motorway and expressway network. It is also mandatory to carry a first aid kit, warning triangle, and safety vest. More information at Asfinag.
