The route through the Green Belt starts at the Nature Park Gate Korberoth in Frankenblick, at the former control post of the Volkspolizei to the restricted area. Opposite the Nature Park information hut stood, until 1990, the best-developed border in the world. The signal fence separated the village of Korberoth from the outside world. We follow the old connecting path with its cherry trees to the village site, which was demolished only in 1984. Relics of centuries of settlement can still be seen there: the village pond, foundations, field terraces. Today the place invites you to remember and relax.
The hiking trail leads along the then heavily fortified signal fence. Today, only clearings in the terrain indicate its former existence. From Taubelsberg, the border guards had an unobstructed view of the border facilities. Today, the hiker is offered a magnificent view of the High Thuringian Slate Mountains and over the Alte Meilschnitz nature reserve in the Neustadt Basin as well as further into the Main valley.
The Nature Park Gate Korberoth in Frankenblick can be reached quickly from Effelder train station after a short climb or by car. From the Nature Park Gate, please follow the markings of the local hiking trails "Panoramaweg Schaumberger Land", "Grenzwanderweg Grünes Band" and "Sandweg". Access points to the circular hiking trail are available at the "Krummer Stein" parking lot in Rückerswind or at the small Isaak parking lot in Schichthöhn.

The Green Belt is a natural oasis. The tourist infrastructure is sometimes still not well developed, so visitors are on the safe side if they bring drinks and provisions with them.
Caution is advised on the patrol path of the border troops; the perforated slabs are sometimes misaligned and can cause hikers to stumble. The patrol path was not created as a hiking trail but as a post path for border troops along the border line. Some sections are therefore very steep, making it strenuous to walk. But it is worth it. You immerse yourself in beautifully pristine nature right in the middle of Germany. Along the way, history and present, nature and culture are addressed.
By car, it is possible to park free of charge at the Nature Park Gate. Further entrances to the hiking trail are at the "Krummer Stein" parking lot and at the Isaak parking lot in Schichthöhn.
By train (South Thuringia Railway) to Effelder station and then on foot to the Nature Park Gate Korberoth. Regular buses come to Effelder from Sonneberg and the surrounding towns.
There are enough free parking spaces available.

A rest at the Peace Oak near Schichthöhn is worthwhile. Locals have set up a small exhibition there. Behind Schichthöhn, the "State Border West" was particularly heavily fortified. Three fences prevented border breaches here. This was often shown off, and high-ranking generals from all over the world frequently visited this model border. In local parlance, the place name Generalsblick became established. Today, a shelter invites you to rest there. It can be reached via the perforated slabs of the patrol path. This path, like the nature of the Green Belt, has been specially designated as a National Natural Monument since 2018.
