On this route, you can experience nature and technology. The paths lead through woods and fields. You walk a section along the recently constructed ICE line and have many opportunities to adjust the route individually. For example, you can take a detour to the Gold Museum in Theuern or to Rauenstein to the Trinius hut, from where you have a breathtaking view of the Franconian region down to Staffelstein if the weather cooperates. Back in Schalkau, the Schaumburg is a worthwhile destination, located close to the actual route. The castle ruin has been gradually restored in recent years and invites you to a panoramic view of the Schaumberger Land around Schalkau.
From the market, we walk through Sturmgasse towards the central station. Then turn right over Wolfsruh and Rödersgrund towards Theuern. At Jannowitzbrücke with the passing station, it continues to Theuern. Along the way, you can turn off towards Rauenstein or the Gold Museum. Before Theuern, we take the path towards Galgenberg. It goes under an ICE bridge and shortly after offers the opportunity to take a detour to Truckenthal. Before reaching Galgenberg, there is a junction to Heinzenhütte. From there you can go directly over the ridge to the viewpoint at Galgenberg. Here there is a wonderful view over Schalkau and the surrounding small villages. Directly opposite, you can also see Schaumburg. On our way down, we take the small hidden paths behind a community garden area and come out in the settlement on the hill, from where we then take the footpath towards the tourist information. There we cross the intersection and behind the houses take the footpath towards Schäferei. From there, we walk past the former Heinzenbräu by the swimming pool towards Ehnes. At the top, it then goes left and we reach the main road below the Schalkau cemetery in the direction of Schalkau market, where our route ends.
You basically only need light hiking gear such as sturdy footwear and some provisions to calmly enjoy the beautiful viewpoints.
Along the ICE line, due to the risk of accidents, you must strictly keep to the signposted paths.
Coming from the A73, take exit 5 (Eisfeld-Nord) and then continue on the B281 south until just past the second roundabout. There, continue on the B89 towards Schlakau / Sonneberg.
You can reach Schalkau with trains of the SüdThüringenBahn from the direction of Sonneberg. Simply use this link for travel planning and add your desired travel period and starting point:
