We warmly welcome you to the cradle of Christmas tree decorations.
Right here on this square the first glassworks of the town was founded in 1597. The glassmaking tradition is still alive in Lauscha today.
On your way to the Rennsteig you will pass directly by the Museum of Glass Art. A visit is highly recommended. The range of exhibited pieces spans from early forest glass to courtly and bourgeois ceremonial vessels. You can also admire glass beads, glass toys, glass eyes, and technical glass.
A separate room is devoted to the Christmas tree decoration invented here in Lauscha. A very special experience is offered by the Farbglashütte Lauscha. Nowhere else can you experience at such close range how glassmakers pull the glowing glass blobs by hand into threads up to 90 meters long. These colorful glass rods are exported worldwide for further processing.
You can even try glassblowing yourself and blow your own lucky ball or wrap a bead. That will be your very own souvenir from Lauscha.
An unforgettable experience is also provided by the Marktiegelschanze. You can visit the ski jump tower and actually feel like a ski jumper during the 3D ski jump simulation in the athletes’ warming room.
During your short hike to the Rennsteig you will pass the Jugendstil church. From there you have a marvelous view into the town center with the typical slate-roofed houses on the mountain slopes.
