From the starting point in Lichtenhain, the hike leads past the Hoffnungskirche church into the center of Oberweißbach. Here is the birthplace of Friedrich Fröbel, who founded the first German kindergarten in (Bad) Blankenburg in 1840. His pedagogical guiding ideas of the necessary playful engagement of children with nature and the environment still determine the daily pedagogical routine in kindergartens worldwide today.
A visit to the birthplace, which is now set up as the Friedrich Fröbel Museum and also houses the Oberweißbach tourist information, is an absolute must for hikers following the trail of the Buckelapotheker, because there is a permanent exhibition "Olitätenhandel" where one can extensively learn about the development and significance of this trade.
At the next waypoint of the hike, at the Heckerbergshütte, the herb nature trail begins, which leads over the Kräuterhütte herb hut up to the Kirchberg and to the Nature Park Gate at the Fröbelturm. About 80 wild medicinal herbs can be found along this path. Small signs reveal the names of the herbs and with a smartphone and the respective QR codes on the signs, you can learn many details about these plants.
A guesthouse and observation tower invite you to linger before the path continues gently downhill along the ridge to Cursdorf, a small spa town between Kirchberg and Meuselbacher Kuppe.
Here, it is the Historical Glass Apparatus Museum in the town center that invites visitors for another museum visit. Historical personalities of the region, Heinrich Geißler, Rudolf Götze, and the Preßler brothers earned great merits in the creation and production of gas discharge tubes, without which the development of gas discharge physics and X-ray technology would not have been possible. At the museum, one can familiarize oneself with the function of these tubes in a unique presentation and enjoy the fascinating effects during their discharge.
In addition, with the Hoffnungskirche and the "Friedrich Fröbel" memorial museum in Oberweißbach, as well as the Historical Glass Apparatus Museum in Cursdorf, many other themes are offered that make this hike not only a healthy activity, relaxation, and recreation in a charming landscape but also an intellectual and cultural experience for many.
Start of the hike – Fröbelwald – Lichtenhainer Höhe – Oberweißbach Fröbelmuseum – Heckersberghütte – Kräuterhütte – Fröbelturm – Himmelsleiter – Cursdorf – along the flat section of the mountain railway back to the start of the hike.
The path is consistently marked with a yellow flower umbel on a white background. Additionally, the herb nature trail is marked with a green K in the yellow umbel.
The path leads downhill from Lichtenhain to Oberweißbach, then uphill to the Fröbelturm. The short ascent from the parking lot to the Fröbelturm is somewhat strenuous. From the Fröbelturm, it gently descends along the ridge down to the stop of the mountain railway in Cursdorf. From there, return to Lichtenhain via the cycle path.
If you do not want to walk this route back, which is quite doable and offers beautiful views, you can take the railcar of the mountain railway. This is especially appealing when the Olitätenwagen is in operation.

If you are hiking on this route with clear visibility, you should not hesitate to climb the Fröbelturm. From about 800 m height, there is a wide view, especially on winter days, allowing you to clearly see the Brocken in the Harz, the Leuchtenburg near Kahla, and beyond that industrial facilities at the gates of Leipzig.
