Sauerbrunnen Loop Trail

The approximately 18-kilometer loop trail starts at Hirschplatz in Faurndau. From there, we walk toward the cemetery and follow the blue “Sauerbrunnen” signs; from there, the trail leads through the wild and romantic Wiesental valley along the stream to Jebenhausen.

Once in Jebenhausen, in addition to sampling the water at the Jebenhausen Sauerbrunnen, it’s worth taking a detour to the Natural History Museum and the Jewish Museum, which is housed in the old Protestant church.

Passing by the home of the Göppingen mineral spring, the trail continues across green meadows and over a small bridge to Bezgenriet. From there, the trail leads through the center of Bezgenriet toward the sports field—where you can stop for a bite to eat—and on to the tranquil hamlet of Pliensbach. In the tranquil hamlet of Pliensbach, too, you can stop for a rustic meal halfway along the route.

Refreshed, the loop trail continues toward Hattenhofen, along the Butzbach stream to Sparwiesen. If you’d like, you can stop between Sparwiesen and Filseck Castle at the Charlottensee natural monument to watch waterfowl and enjoy the silence.

The trail then continues from Charlottensee through the forest across the Filseckerfeld to the landscape park at Filseck Castle, where you can catch your breath on winding paths. Enjoy the peace and nature before heading downhill back to the starting point in Faurndau.

Wear sturdy, non-slip shoes and weather-appropriate clothing. A backpack with water, snacks, and a first-aid kit is recommended.

When it's wet, some trails can be slippery and dangerous. Watch your step and use hiking poles for stability if necessary.

Take the RE 5 from Stuttgart or Ulm to the Göppingen train station. From there, take bus lines 912 or 913 to "Faurndau, Marienstraße." Take the MEX 16 to the Faurndau train station.

Adapt your behavior to the situation at hand. Safety comes first. Respect other users of the woods and open fields. Be considerate of animals and plants. Plan ahead and make the most of daylight. Try to avoid the early morning and evening twilight hours. Observe the ban on entering agricultural land during the growing season. Stay on marked trails and avoid forest edges; this helps wildlife get used to people.
