A route through the Vipava hills takes us through vineyards and picturesque Vipava villages, where the priest Matija Vertovec worked and lived, a professional writer and teacher of Vipava winegrowers. He was the first to write in the Slovenian language about viticulture, winemaking, and cellar work; in 1844 he published the book Vinoreja.
From the village of Ustje, the path runs through Dolenje, over Planina, where Matija Vertovec served, to Šmarje, where he was born, and back through VrtovÄe and TevÄe to the starting point in Ustje. Along the way, there are numerous natural and cultural monuments. You can observe fossil sites near the Vipava River and the beauties of typical Vipava settlements, especially the monument-protected center of the village of Šmarje. From viewpoints such as Ostri vrh, a wonderful view opens up over the entire Vipava Valley. The well-marked route leads us through vineyards and villages. The route will take approximately five hours, but can take longer if you stop at one of the many wine cellars along the way.
