Kajaani's Kuluntalahti is a good place to start paddling on the waters of Nuasjärvi. From Kuluntalahti, you can paddle along the river to one of the smaller lakes, Särämäjärvi. The route leads from the head of Kuluntalahti through beautiful rural scenery past Sivolanniemi to the mouth of the Särämäjoki river, from where you paddle towards the narrow, gently flowing river.
Särämäjoki is about 700 meters long. At first, you travel through a lush river landscape, but then you face a series of tunnels. There are four consecutive tunnels in a pipe. First, you pass under Takkarannantie, then the railway, followed by highway five’s road and a separate light traffic route. The old vaulted railway bridge is definitely the most impressive of these.
Särämäjärvi itself is not particularly scenic, but at its western end, a narrow stream flows into it. The mouth of the stream is a nice grassy channel.
There are no official landing places along the route, but landing is possible under the right of public access. However, note that the shores, especially in the Kuluntalahti area, are mostly inhabited.
The route begins at the Kuluntalahti marina. The starting point is a sandy beach. Next to the boat ramp, there is a small, shallow pier that can be used if desired.
Paddle along the western shore area of Kuluntalahti and after Sivolanniemi you will reach the Särämäjoki river mouth. The river leads to Särämäjärvi.
On the way back, if the winds are favorable, you can paddle from the river mouth to the opposite shore near Mansikkaniemi.

Passable near the shore by canoe, kayak, and rowboat. The route is very shallow in many places far from the shore.
The route is suitable for both beginners and experienced paddlers. There are no flowing water sections on the route.
The route mainly follows narrow water areas along peninsulas and islands; there are no wide water areas to cross. However, waves can rise high on Kuluntalahti with a south wind.
There may be some motorboat traffic in the early part of the summer. Paddlers must yield to other water traffic.
Remember that a large part of the shores are inhabited, so respect privacy – do not paddle right along the shore waters.
Wear a life jacket while paddling and preferably paddle close to the shore.
It is safest to move on the water with a friend or in a group, especially if you are not familiar with the water area. Before the paddling trip, it is good to check weather forecasts. Consider wind direction and strength on the open lake.
Bring change of clothes as well as snacks and drinks.
Take your phone with you, packed in a waterproof manner.
From Kajaani, take road 5 north and then Vuokatintie in Kuluntalahti. The marina is by the roadside.
It is about 11 km from downtown Kajaani.
Some of the buses between Kajaani and Sotkamo operate via the so-called northern route through Kuluntalahti.
At the marina area on the shore.
