This trail is easily reachable from Ruka Village, the center of Ruka Ski Resort, and it is a great choice for anyone who wants to enjoy the snow caked trees, shimmering white snow and the pure, peaceful nature of the north. Snowshoeing is a great way to experience Finland’s wintry wildernesses and anyone can try it!
Pyhän Jyssäys trail starts from the cottage area of Ruka but soon you will find yourself from a forestry path ascending to Pyhävaara hill. "Pyhä" means sacred or holy, and it is known that Pyhävaara has been a sacred place for Sami people, the indigenous people of the north.
Pack some snacks to enjoy in the warmth of Pyhävaara Lappish hut that is located on the top, in the halfway of this trail. You can also grill sausages on the fireplace. A viewpoint with information sign pointing out the nearest fells and lakes is located near the hut.
The trail is marked using wooden stakes with green reflective tape and a red reflective badge Read more about snowshoe hiking in Finnish Lapland from visitfinland.com
Dress according to weather. Winter temperatures in northern Finland can be quite harsh, so make sure you have the right kind of outdoor equipment. Read more tips on how to dress right in the winter from visitfinland.com.
We don't recommend taking this tour in the wintertime without snowshoes. New snowfall and changes in the temperature might make the trail very difficult to walk without snowshoes.
