Hike Oberweißbach - Katzhütte

The hike from Oberweißbach to Katzhütte is a varied and eventful route that showcases the beauty of the Schwarzatal. You start in Oberweißbach, the birthplace of the educator Friedrich Fröbel, and follow the hiking trail towards Heckersberg Hut. There you can take a break and enjoy the view over the landscape. Then continue to the Herb Hut, where you can refuel with regional specialties. The next highlight is the Wurmberg, which at 749 meters is the highest peak in the Schwarzatal. From here, you have a wonderful panoramic view over the Thuringian Forest and the Slate Mountains. A short descent brings you to the Fröbelturm, a 25-meter-high observation tower that commemorates the city's famous son. 

Now continue to Cursdorf station, where you have the option to ride the Thuringian Mountain Railway. This historic railway has connected Oberweißbach with Cursdorf since 1922 and overcomes an altitude difference of 323 meters. The ride takes about 20 minutes and offers a unique view of the valley.
Arriving in Cursdorf, continue hiking through the forest to the Schneidemühle, a former wood processing facility which is now a museum. Here you can learn more about the history and technology of the wood industry in the region. The last section of the route leads you along the Schwarza River to the Forellenhof, an idyllic trout farming facility where you can treat yourself to fresh trout. Finally, you reach Katzhütte station, where your hike ends.
