Along the Hubelj on the natural science educational trail

The route starts behind the youth hotel Hiša mladih in AjdovšÄina. After crossing the bridge over the Hubelj, we ascend in a few steps past the downhill track onto the path leading to the spring of the Hubelj. Soon you will notice the first information boards announcing the beginning of the natural science educational trail. The 3100 m long circular path takes us through the mysterious world of nature in the immediate vicinity of AjdovšÄina. Through 24 stations, you will become more familiar with the wonderful diversity of nature: you will learn about the geological base and soil of the Vipava valley, the rich plant and animal world along the Hubelj, rocks and the aquatic ecosystem, and the dry karst meadow on Školj. Along the educational trail, at individual points, the main tree and shrub species growing locally are presented. Along the way, you can stop, sit on benches, and listen to nature. After about 20 minutes of moderate walking uphill along the Hubelj stream, you reach the spring of this torrential river. The Hubelj springs from the steep cliffs at the steep southern foot of the Trnovski Forest and is one of the strongest tributaries of the Vipava River. The spring is especially magnificent after heavy rainfall. Water gushes out of numerous holes of the karst underground and falls into the stream in mighty waterfalls. The view of the foaming water is magnificent, as droplets spray from an altitude of 249 m down to the bridge, which is 40 m lower. For a break, you can choose the nearby Gostilna pri izviru Hublja, where typical Vipava dishes are offered. Using markings, continue along the path to the dry karst meadow Školj, which rises like a large table above the AjdovšÄina plain. The top of Školj offers a wonderful view over the Vipava valley from Razdrto to Kuclje, and across the valley over the rolling wine-growing hills towards the Karst. Complete the circle with a descent to the starting point at the Pale Sports Park.
